GoMA

Exhibition / Interpretation

A freestanding interpretation panel in the GoMA exhibition, with the word Taste continuing onto the floor.
GoMA / Gallery of Modern Art / Glasgow.

The project_

Very tight budget. Enough room for an idea.

The brief_

An invitation to design an exhibition of work from the Gallery of Modern Art’s archive in Glasgow. The artists included David Hockney, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Andy Warhol, Stanley Spencer and Andy Goldsworthy.

The observation_

I needed scale and presence on a very tight budget. Digitally printed door blanks provided both. They are cheap. For the interpretation, we observed how close people stood to the art. Forty centimetres seemed to be the comfortable distance. That informed where the typesetting began.

The application_

I put the texts on the floor in black vinyl. Artist names continued onto walls and ceilings, linking the gallery spaces. The reverse of each door blank carried the artists’ biographies. A modest set of materials, given a very particular job.
